Flying with CBD – What is currently allowed?

When it comes to flying with CBD, it’s always a good idea to stay as informed as possible as to what is allowed. This means checking in with the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), who is in charge of determining what’s allowed on planes, both in carry-ons and checked bags.

The TSA states on their website that CBD products must comply with the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 [1] in order to be allowed on flights. This means that the CBD product must “contain no more than .3% THC on a dry weight basis,” or be “approved by the FDA.” [2]

Fortunately, you can find a wide variety of CBD products ranging from THC-free CBD Isolate to Full Spectrum CBD that meet these regulations. We also recommend that you stay up to date by checking the travel status of whatever you may want to bring on the TSA website. [4]

It’s important to source your CBD from a quality source like Medterra that uses third party testing to ensure consistency and quality across all products to ensure that they comply with federal regulations.

This is especially true when traveling internationally, as “international rules and regulations on CBD are less clear,” and “some countries have much stricter drug laws,” according to Smart Travel writer, Ashley Rossi. [5]

For now, if you’re traveling with CBD, research the laws on the location you’re traveling to, and be prepared to leave any products containing THC at home.

Domestically, the TSA’s main concern is issues related to security. It is “designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers,” and that doesn’t include legal, hemp-derived CBD products.

But keep in mind that TSA regulations still apply for carrying on tinctures and creams, so make sure that your bottle is under the 3.4oz TSA limit.
