WIND DOWN WITH A BOOK

Books are better than screens when it comes to sleeping well. For one, they don’t emit blue light (more on why that matters soon). Two, the metronomic cadence most people read to themselves sets the mind up for sleep pretty perfectly. Reading is relaxing — and relaxation is a close relative of sleep. 

More than a few studies confirm that reading makes it easier to have deep, restorative sleep. [2] Fittingly enough, the opposite is also true: sleeping enough boosts your IQ and reading ability. [3] Talk about a positive feedback loop! 

TAKE A RELAXING BATH

Few things match the healing power of a relaxing bath, particularly after a stressful day in the office or a long day on the field (for all you pro athletes out there). Bathtime is also a wonderful form of me time where you can get away from others and just be alone with your own thoughts. Its relaxation-boosting effects pretty much have to be felt to be understood. 

What makes baths so relaxing? Probably the fact that they foster mental stillness and raise your body temperature, which sets the stage for future sleep mode. [4]

Bonus points if you throw some Epsom salt, bath bombs, or other magnesium sources into your bath. These substances relax your muscle fibers and make bath time even more relaxing. [5]

TURN OFF BLUE LIGHTS 

Research shows that blue light can hurt your sleep by tricking your body into thinking it’s still day. 

Unfortunately, virtually all modern tech devices —  and many appliances, ceiling lights, even street lights — are lit with blue light. While modern lighting is convenient, the wavelength of these light sources spells biochemical disaster. 

Today we’re spending more time under said light sources than ever, largely thanks to COVID lockdown-induced boredom. A 2020 study from the Journal of Ophthalmology found that over 30 percent of its participants were using a blue-light-emitting device between 9 to 11 hours a day, and another 15 percent were using such devices 12 to 14 hours a day. Taken objectively, these numbers are shocking. [6]

What does nighttime screen time do? It’s linked to all sorts of undesirable stuff. 

Blue-light screens mess with your body’s circadian rhythm, sending a signal to ‘wake up!’ when it’s actually time to wind down. Studies show that as little as 2 hours of blue light exposure disrupts sleep by preventing melatonin release. Many sleep experts now recommend powering down your devices 3 hours before you want to get some shut-eye. [7]

Blue light exposure has also been linked to increased rates of certain types of cancer, including eye cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. These associations are clearly seen in night shift workers, but they likely apply to anyone who overdoes the blue light late at night. [8]

Blue light impacts kids even more strongly. Their still-developing eyes are more easily permeated by blue-light screens. Excess screen time has been correlated with nearsightedness, hyperactivity, and even obesity. Consider shielding your children from these dangers by getting them off the devices after sundown. [9

If you must use blue light at night, there’s one simple safeguard: blue-blocking glasses. (True blue-blocking glasses will have an amber lens, not a clear one.) If you have children, it might also be wise to invest in their health by getting them a pair, too. As one study put it, “amber lenses represent a safe, affordable, and easily implemented therapeutic intervention for [blue-light-related] insomnia symptoms.” [10]

And don’t neglect the fact that melatonin is produced in the morning, in response to natural sunlight — so be sure to get some morning sun too!

What is mindfulness? 

To put things super simply, mindfulness is a mental state where one focuses on their awareness of the present moment. Not the past, not the future — just now. Mindfulness involves accepting your feelings, thoughts, and perceptions.

The best way to reach this sought-after state of mind is meditation. Meditation allows you to process and break past all the anxieties and insecurities that normally hold you back. It also allows you to unweight yourself from that never-ending to-do list your mind normally defaults to. 

Meditation involves mentally training you to live in the moment — in other words, to live mindfully.

In Ayurveda, it was used to improve memory, against leprosy, and many other things. […] This is a medicine, and it has to be treated as such.” [1]

Hemp and yoga have a shared history. Could there be a good reason why the Vedas mention them both?

Modern science hints that there is. Let’s unravel this reason by zooming out a little bit and looking at the human endocannabinoid system. 

One of the endocannabinoid system’s (ECS’s) most important facets is an endocannabinoid called anandamide. This molecule gets its name from ananda, the Sanskrit word for bliss. High anandamide levels make a person feel naturally blissful! [2

The term yoga originates from Sanskrit, too. It’s the Sanskrit word for union — the union that comes with really knowing yourself. All of yoga’s major terms and principles, in fact, come from this ancient language. [3

Maybe it’s only fitting that the endocannabinoid system and yoga overlap in their etymologies. 

Why? Because the ECS is what makes yoga’s benefits possible in the first place. 

Yoga For The Endocannabinoid System

And this relationship goes both ways. In other words, the endocannabinoid system facilitates yoga’s best benefits…and yoga makes the endocannabinoid system work even better. 

A study appropriately titled Care and Feeding of the Endocannabinoid System describes this relationship. According to the study, activities like massage therapy, yoga, acupuncture, and healthful eating may all strengthen the ECS: [4]

“Stress management may reverse the effects of chronic stress on eCB signaling. . . .  Clinical anecdotes suggest that [techniques like] meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises impart mild cannabimimetic effects.”

Even stretching can trigger anandamide production in the muscles being stretched! All in all, the endocannabinoid system is highly adaptable. 

It seems to respond to yoga perfectly — triggering a whole host of mental and physical benefits. If yoga gives you clarity, calmness, peace, or bliss…you probably have your endocannabinoid system to thank. Maybe it’s not so surprising that the Vedas mentioned both yoga and hemp after all. 

CBD + Yoga = Amazing

The Vedas make it pretty clear that hemp was given to humankind to increase our joy and personal freedom and help us overcome the inevitable stresses of life. [5]

So, what really happens when you combine CBD and yoga? All sorts of potentially-great stuff:

How To Live In The Moment

If yoga had a single ultimate goal, it might just be to live in the moment. 

This is harder than it might sound. Staying mindful enough to be fully present in the now takes a lot of practice. Once you reach this mindful state, though, everything shifts. You get more focused and less anxious. You find yourself in a state where things just seem to flow.

Living Healthy with Alana Blanchard

We caught up with pro-surfer, soon to be mother of two, and a Medterra family member, Alana Blanchard, to hear her thoughts on healthy living, motherhood, and CBD.

This has been a pretty hectic year for me and my family. With quarantine and a new baby on the way, we’ve just been doing everything we can to spend as much quality time together as possible. Usually, I’d be surfing to stay active, but I stopped at 20 weeks so I could spend some more time with Banks.

Lately, I’ve really been enjoying starting my days off with a walk, because moving always starts my day out right. Living that active and healthy lifestyle has always been extremely important for me, and while I’m not taking CBD right now, it’s played a big role in keeping me feeling my best over the past few years. 

My CBD journey

I started hearing about CBD probably 4-5 years ago. I was always interested in it as a natural way to counteract stress and discomfort. I was definitely skeptical at first, but as I did more research to learn the difference between CBD from hemp and marijuana, I got more curious about its health properties. 

Then one day after a surf competition, I was going up to get my award and saw the Medterra booth. I was a year postpartum with Banks, so I decided to give it a try and was just amazed by how much it helped with my recovery. 

Because my lifestyle is so active and demanding, I love anything that will help me feel my best and recover better. I like using CBD as part of my wellness routine, and for helping me manage stress.

We’re plant-based in our house, so I’m always making smoothie bowls with lots of greens and CBD oil. I also like putting it into turmeric lattes and salad bowls with potatoes, hummus, and quinoa. It’s a really big part of my me-time, so I’m excited to be able to get that back into my routine.

With baby #2 on the way, I’m trying to focus on relaxing and spending time with Banks and Jack. With Banks I was more stressed – he was my first and it was all new, but this time around I’m finding it much easier to relax. Being able to have that time with both of them has just been amazing for my overall wellbeing. 

I’m excited to be able to work out again, but I’m prepared to take it slow. Resting is so important for new moms. You’re up a lot, your body is adjusting and readjusting, and what you really need is time to heal. There’s such a strong stigma pressuring new moms to rush back into our lives, but it’s so important to take your time and do what’s best for you. My advice would be to just love your body. Listen to it, tune into it, ignore that pressure, and let yourself just be aware of all the amazing things your body can do.

CBN – Everything You Need to Know About Cannabinol

CBD’s popularity has been booming for over three years now. Amazing how time flies, huh?

Now it seems to be CBN’s turn. CBN, or cannabinol, is another amazing cannabinoid found only in cannabis/hemp…and it has some pretty unique effects. Here’s what you need to know about CBN.

What is CBN?

CBN (cannabinol) is a cannabinoid, which places it into the same family as CBD, CBG, THC, and over a hundred others. [1]

Unlike any of the other big six cannabinoids, however, CBN shows up when hemp is exposed to heat or light. (Only trace amounts of CBN are naturally present in full spectrum hemp oil.) Both CBD and THC can be broken down into CBN under the right conditions. [2]

CBN may not be quite as well known as relatives like CBD or THC, but it was actually the first cannabinoid discovered. This happened back in the 30s, at the lab of a british chemist named Robert S. Cahn. [3]

CBN also has unique effects. Its slightly smaller structure allows it to activate receptors — and confer effects — that other cannabinoids just can’t. [4] More on CBN’s effects later. 

How to take CBN

CBN, like virtually any other cannabinoid, can be infused into a wide variety of products. Common ways to take CBN include oils, tinctures, and edibles. 

CBN oil 

CBN oil is the simplest, most effective way to take CBN. CBN can be infused into a premium carrier oil just like CBD can. 

Why the similarity? Both CBN and CBD are fat-soluble, meaning they’re both absorbed best when taken with a little oil/fat. They’re also both broken down in your liver, which means that taking CBN sublingually via oil/tincture is the best way to avoid premature breakdown. [5]

CBN tinctures

CBN tinctures are another popular way to take CBD. Technically, a tincture is a liquid preparation of cannabinoids that uses an alcohol base, though today the terms oil and tincture are often used interchangeably. True CBN tinctures were once rare — but they’re slowly getting more common. 

CBN effects

Many CBN users find that CBD is just a little more powerful than CBD. CBN feels relaxing and uplifting…especially if one takes a big dose. 

While CBN works well on its own, it becomes even more powerful if taken alongside CBD.  

According to one study, “combinations of CBD/CBN induced a longer-lasting reduction of mechanical [pain] sensitization than either compound alone.” [6] Some experts feel that CBN plays a vital role within hemp’s overall entourage effect. 

CBN and sleep

Sleep might be the area where CBN truly shines. Studies show that it may regulate the central nervous system enough to instill peace and calmness. 

One older study found that CBN may improve sleep just as much as THC. [7] “I think CBN can be effective as a sleep aid,” naturopathic doctor Nadia Musavvir explained to TZR. “It’s one of the more studied effects and supposed to be more effective than CBD for sleep.” [8]

Dosing CBN

Unlike some cannabinoids, CBN seems to be powerful enough to also work at low doses. Consider starting with a low dose and slowly adjusting upwards as needed. 

Summing things up

At the end of the day, CBN is well-studied, legal, and safe. We can’t think of many better ways to relax naturally than to try out this unique cannabinoid.
