The Science Of Sleep And CBD

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. Oh no, there’s the alarm. You get out of bed and you’re already exhausted. Didn’t you just lay in bed for hours? Why are you still so tired?

Tossing and turning all night can affect every aspect of your life. It’s difficult to focus on anything when you haven’t slept well. Even the slightest bit of sleep deprivation can affect your productivity and make you feel like less than your real self. You deserve to sleep — and to sleep better!

CBD can help with a myriad of things in your day to day life. It can relieve aches, help you find balance, keep you calm and relaxed, and most importantly, it can help you get to sleep.

Whether you’re taking a gummy, a drop from a tincture, or a capsule, CBD is an excellent aid for getting better and more restful sleep. But how does CBD work in your body? And how does it affect your sleep? It begins and ends with an internal system in your body called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short.

The ECS is essentially a system of receptors in your brain and nervous system that interact with cannabinoids, including THC and CBD. These interactions produce the effects we associate with cannabinoids. The CBD you take attaches itself to specific receptors within the ECS that play a role in regulating stress, mood, inflammation levels, and more. [1]

How does CBD impact sleep specifically? Research shows that it interacts with receptors tied to the sleep and wake cycles within the body. CBD may also help relieve stress, which further allows the body to relax and settle into sleep. When combined with THC in the form of full Spectrum CBD, its effects are potentiated — allowing you to sleep even better than you would with CBD alone. [2]

By getting more restful and fulfilling sleep from CBD, you can get back on track and feel recharged and ready for the day. After all, you spend over half your lifetime in bed. Make the most of it.

If you’re ready to leverage CBD’s power to sleep better, the following products should help.

  • Pain Relief Cream
  • Good Night Liposomal CBD+ Capsules
  • Sleep Tight Gummies
  • Evening Wellness Bundle

Pain Relief Cream

At first glance a pain relief cream may not have any obvious connection to sleep. After all, topical CBD products don’t become absorbed into the bloodstream. Yet they can still silence stubborn aches and pains enough to improve sleep in a more indirect way.

If your aches and pains are severe enough to keep you up at night, Medterra’s Pain Relief Cream may be right for you. This OTC product breaks the stereotypes of traditional pain creams that only rely on menthol, and can provide fast relief for arthritis and joint pain.

Good Night Liposomal CBD+ Capsules

Good Night Liposomal CBD+ Capsules provide an efficient, fast-acting way to sleep better. It combines our premium CBD with a blend of proven sleep enhancers, including melatonin, chamomile, passionflower, and GABA. All these ingredients are delivered liposomally, resulting in up to 10x faster absorption than traditional oral capsules.

Sleep Tight Gummies

Medterra’s CBD Sleep Tight Gummies are designed specifically to help you relax before bed and get a good night’s sleep. They taste delicious, too, having been flavored with natural strawberry extract. Each bag contains thirty 25mg CBD gummies — enough to facilitate a month of good sleep for most people.

Evening Wellness Bundle

If you’re looking for a truly comprehensive natural sleep solution, our Evening Wellness Bundle might be an ideal choice. It features Good Night CBD + Capsules alongside a high-octane 3,000mg tincture.

CBD can help with a myriad of things in your day to day life. It may relieve aches and pains, help you find full-body balance, and keep you calm. Most important to this blog, it may also help you sleep. Consider trying some of the above sleep-specific CBD products if you feel like it’s time for a change.

Post Workout Recovery & CBD

Practically everyone knows that working out is tied to all sorts of mental and physical benefits. [1][2]

What’s much less well-known is that working out too much is tied to all sorts of downsides. People who overdo it on the slopes or in the gym are more likely to experience something called overtraining syndrome, which involves poor sleep, unpredictable mood, and increased risk of injury.

What constitutes ‘too much’ working out? That depends on how well you’re recovering from workouts — and that depends on what you do in the post workout period. [3]

Optimizing your post workout routine can help you recover faster and come back fitter for your next workout. Keep reading to learn how CBD could help.

  • CBD and calmness
  • CBD: pre workout or post workout?
  • The top post-workout CBD products

Many — if not most — people who take CBD for the first time report how tangibly calm it makes them.

Why does this happen? Because CBD impacts the production of several different classes of hormones. In the case of calmness, what CBD is doing is reducing your body’s production of cortisol

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid that’s involved in the infamous fight-or-flight response. If you think back to the last time you were so stressed out that your heart began racing and your palms got sweaty…yep, that was probably cortisol.

While cortisol and related stress hormones do have some important functions, chronically high cortisol levels are virtually the antithesis of calmness. (Chronically high cortisol is also terrible for sleep patterns and healthy aging.)

The good news about all this is that CBD could help. Studies dating back to the 90s show that it may reduce cortisol production. [4] Since cortisol is also responsible for the formation of fear-based memories, CBD may also help you forget about less-than-calming past events. [5

Going back to practical topics, CBD’s calming qualities also make a perfect complement to yoga, meditation, or other chill times. Now you can keep calm…and press on!

If we had to pick either/or, we’d probably go with post workout CBD use.

Why? Because CBD may help get your body back into balance after a hard workout. “Taking in cannabinoids could be thought of as supplementing or increasing the activity of your body’s existing system,” renowned cycling coach Chris Carmichael tells NatuRx. “Athletes apply greater stress to their bodies than the [endocannabinoid system] can handle.”

Getting this system back into balance is delightfully simple. “Adding in [CBD] may help this overloaded system get neurotransmitters back under control.” [6] CBD both sensitizes endocannabinoid receptors and helps your body produce more of its own endocannabinoids.

The most important thing to do in the post-workout period is improve recovery time. Some CBD products — like the ones listed below — may be better at that than others.

  • Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD
  • Relief and Recovery Cream
  • Relief and Recovery Roll-On
  • Good Night Liposomal CBD+

Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD

If you thought broad spectrum CBD was great, wait til you try Ultra Broad Spectrum. This new type of CBD features everything regular CBD offers and then some. It’s CBD…evolved.

How so? It’s got an industry-first 10:1 ratio of CBD to additional active cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, plus terpenes and flavonoids). Considering that terpenes and flavonoids have anti-inflammatory properties, these additions boost recovery further.

Relief and Recovery Cream

As its name implies, our Relief and Recovery Cream is designed to speed recovery from discomfort. It features CBD alongside menthol, arnica, and more. The menthol and arnica combined helps to provide a powerful effect.

Relief and Recovery Roll On

Our Relief and Recovery Rollon-On provides a combination of premium CBD and other inflammation-fighting organic ingredients. Its rapid cooling effect might make it your new favorite postworkout tool!  It comes in a mess-free, roll-on applicator that makes use ultra-easy.

Good Night Liposomal CBD+

Good Night Liposomal CBD+ Capsules provide a fast, efficient way to tap into CBD’s sleep-specific effects. It also contains plenty of other natural sleep enhancers! All these compounds are placed in a liposomal format that results in 10x faster absorption. If you need to get to sleep fast after a tough training session, this is the product for you.

Evening Routines & CBD – How To Wind Down For Restful Sleep

Are you looking for a way to sleep better, feel better, and even rewind your body’s biological clock?

If so, then look no further than the evening routine. A good evening routine sets the stage for a restorative night’s sleep, which sets you up for an awesome next morning. Here’s how it’s done.

  • Wind down with a book
  • Take a relaxing bath
  • Turn off blue lights
  • Try CBD Sleep Gummies
  • Try long-lasting CBD Caps
  • Try CBD-infused tea

Before going into the ins and outs of bedtime routines, however, let’s look at why sleep is so important.

Sleep is when your body recharges its batteries, repairs the countless cellular damages done during the previous day, and produces the majority of its hormones.

Failing to get adequate sleep can lead your body to produce larger amounts of stress hormones like cortisol. Cortisol, in turn, is a truly catabolic hormone — it breaks down your skin and connective tissue, leading to a prematurely aged, tired-looking appearance. Just in case you needed one more reason to put a priority on sleep, there it is! [1

With all that said, here are some ideas about how to sleep better. Just keep in mind that this article won’t be all about CBD.

While we’re big fans of CBD here at Medterra, we also realize that CBD isn’t everything. It’s just one part of the puzzle that is evening routine bliss…

Books are better than screens when it comes to sleeping well. For one, they don’t emit blue light (more on why that matters soon). Two, the metronomic cadence most people read to themselves sets the mind up for sleep pretty perfectly. Reading is relaxing — and relaxation is a close relative of sleep.

More than a few studies confirm that reading makes it easier to have deep, restorative sleep. [2] Fittingly enough, the opposite is also true: sleeping enough boosts your IQ and reading ability. [3] Talk about a positive feedback loop!

Few things match the healing power of a relaxing bath, particularly after a stressful day in the office or a long day on the field (for all you pro athletes out there). Bathtime is also a wonderful form of me time where you can get away from others and just be alone with your own thoughts. Its relaxation-boosting effects pretty much have to be felt to be understood.

What makes baths so relaxing? Probably the fact that they foster mental stillness and raise your body temperature, which sets the stage for future sleep mode. [4]

Bonus points if you throw some Epsom salt, bath bombs, or other magnesium sources into your bath. These substances relax your muscle fibers and make bath time even more relaxing. [5]

Research shows that blue light can hurt your sleep by tricking your body into thinking it’s still day.

Unfortunately, virtually all modern tech devices —  and many appliances, ceiling lights, even street lights — are lit with blue light. While modern lighting is convenient, the wavelength of these light sources spells biochemical disaster.

Today we’re spending more time under said light sources than ever, largely thanks to COVID lockdown-induced boredom. A 2020 study from the Journal of Ophthalmology found that over 30 percent of its participants were using a blue-light-emitting device between 9 to 11 hours a day, and another 15 percent were using such devices 12 to 14 hours a day. Taken objectively, these numbers are shocking. [6]

What does nighttime screen time do? It’s linked to all sorts of undesirable stuff.

Blue-light screens mess with your body’s circadian rhythm, sending a signal to ‘wake up!’ when it’s actually time to wind down. Studies show that as little as 2 hours of blue light exposure disrupts sleep by preventing melatonin release. Many sleep experts now recommend powering down your devices 3 hours before you want to get some shut-eye. [7]

Blue light exposure has also been linked to increased rates of certain types of cancer, including eye cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. These associations are clearly seen in night shift workers, but they likely apply to anyone who overdoes the blue light late at night. [8]

Blue light impacts kids even more strongly. Their still-developing eyes are more easily permeated by blue-light screens. Excess screen time has been correlated with nearsightedness, hyperactivity, and even obesity. Consider shielding your children from these dangers by getting them off the devices after sundown. [9

If you must use blue light at night, there’s one simple safeguard: blue-blocking glasses. (True blue-blocking glasses will have an amber lens, not a clear one.) If you have children, it might also be wise to invest in their health by getting them a pair, too. As one study put it, “amber lenses represent a safe, affordable, and easily implemented therapeutic intervention for [blue-light-related] insomnia symptoms.” [10]

And don’t neglect the fact that melatonin is produced in the morning, in response to natural sunlight — so be sure to get some morning sun too!

Once you’ve set yourself up for relaxation and done your best to avoid blue light’s circadian silliness, it’s time to select a sleep-centric supplement like CBD.

According to FDA data, 39% of all CBD users are using the product to help them sleep better. So far it’s working. “Anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD has made a great deal of difference,” CBD expert Stuart Titus says. [11]

While more research is needed to fully understand how CBD influences sleep patterns, initial clinical trials suggest that it makes getting to sleep easier by calming the mind. A study appropriately titled “Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Study” connected CBD’s pro-sleep benefits directly to its anti-stress ones. [12]

If you’re ready to include CBD in your evening routine, Medterra’s CBD Sleep Tight Gummies is a great way to start. They’re designed to help you relax before bed and get the rest you need to take on tomorrow. Sleep-centric ingredients include full-spectrum CBD, lemon balm, and chamomile.

Sleeping better may be as simple as taking a single gummy roughly one hour before bed. If you don’t feel much from that you can always up your dose slowly over time.

Another great option for supercharging your sleep? Medterra’s Good Night Liposomal capsules. They provide efficient, fast-acting delivery of hemp alongside a soothing blend of sleep enhancers.

Plus they kick in fast. Our patented liposomal technology results in up to ten times faster absorption than traditional oral capsules, giving you the benefits of hemp on demand. [13

They say variety is the spice of life, so here’s a third CBD-centric option: try infusing it into your favorite bedtime tea.

Making CBD-infused tea is easy. Just place a few drops of our Oil Tincture into your favorite mug, right alongside a tea bag of your choice.

Made with our American grown hemp extract and MCT oil, this premium tincture is available in strengths of 500mg, 1000mg, and 3000mg (opt for the 3000 if you really need a morning kick).

And don’t forget about the chance of experiencing some plant+plant synergy. Many popular teas include essential oils and related flavonoids that are relaxing enough to have pro-sleep effects.  [14] Of course, be sure to avoid green tea and other varieties that contain caffeine in the hours prior to bed.

Sleep is one of the most crucial aspects of overall health there is.

In theory, sleeping better is delightfully simple: it just requires the elimination of stress and the avoidance of confusing circadian signals (we’re looking at you, blue light).

In practice, however, we don’t blame you if you feel like you need all the help you can get. That’s what CBD’s there for! If you haven’t already, try adding it to your evening routine. We think you’ll walk away happy…and well-rested.

How To Integrate CBD Into Your Preworkout Routine

Working out is one of the best ways to improve your mood and boost your health.

Thousands of studies and millions of personal experiences testify to the same thing: working out is correlated to a healthier heart, healthier body weight, and longer life. [1][2]

But preparation is everything when it comes to the ideal workout routine. What you do in the preworkout period can either make or break your experience. [3]

Thankfully, CBD can help. It turns out that CBD is a perfect addition to the preworkout period. Keep reading to find out why.

  • CBD and metabolism
  • Does more CBD = more focus?
  • CBD: preworkout or postworkout?
  • How to use CBD as a preworkout

When taken consistently, CBD shifts one’s metabolism towards stability and calmness.

Studies show that it reduces the accumulation of harmful free radicals and promotes fat-burning. [4] One study showed that CBD activated brown adipose tissue — a special type of fat that actually burns fat for fuel —  much like taking cold showers does. [5

And when your body is in fat-burning mode, good things happen. You’re less likely to run out of fuel midway through a hard run or long day out on the golf course.

CBD’s ability to reduce stress and ‘turn on’ fat burning also makes it great for focus. Many people who take CBD report back that they can focus on the task at hand more easily, whether said task entails an intense study session or workout.

Not only does CBD not impair cognitive function…it may actually improve focus. [6] One recent study showed that CBD improved hippocampal blood flow. Considering that the hippocampus plays a vital role in sifting through sensory information, this is a pretty big deal. [7

CBD shines in both the preworkout and postworkout period, but we’ll focus on its preworkout benefits for now.

Many of our athletes and ambassadors enjoy taking a small but consistent amount of CBD each morning before they workout. CBD’s fat-burning effects may make it most helpful to endurance athletes, but even strength athletes tend to do best with some morning CBD use.

To sum things up, CBD is a pretty great preworkout. Consider taking a small amount of CBD 1-2 hours before your next fitness session.

Also don’t forget that some CBD products make better preworkouts than others. Here’s our top four:

  • CBD Tincture
  • Ultra Broad Spectrum CBD
  • Relief and Recovery Cream
  • Relief and Recovery Roll-On
  • Good Morning Liposomal CBD

CBD Tincture

A good workout begins with a good day, and a good day begins with a good morning. Set yourself up for AM success with our classic CBD tincture. (Another good option is our Good Morning Liposomal CBD, but more on that later.)

Our most popular product, Medterra’s CBD Tinctures are made with our 99%+ CBD and Organic MCT Oil (coconut-derived) and are available in strengths of 500mg, 1000mg and 3000mg. It’s safe, effective, affordable, and easy-to-use.

The added terpenes and flavonoids have their own anti-inflammatory, pro-focus properties. Who doesn’t want that before their next workout?

Relief and Recovery Cream

As its name implies, our Relief and Recovery Cream is designed to speed recovery from discomfort. It features CBD alongside menthol, arnica, and more. The menthol provides a powerful cooling effect…the arnica blunts pain. If you’re still feeling the burn from your last workout, this cream might come to the rescue.

Relief and Recovery Roll On

Our Relief and Recovery Rollon-On provides a combination of premium CBD and other inflammation-fighting organic ingredients. Its rapid cooling effect might make it your new favorite preworkout tool, and it comes in a mess-free roll-on that makes application ultra-easy.

Good Morning Liposomal CBD+

Good Morning Liposomal CBD+ Capsules provide an efficient way to tap into CBD’s most energizing effects. In addition to 25mg of CBD, each Good Morning capsule features 40mg of caffeine and an energizing mix of adaptogens and botanicals to help start your day right. All these compounds are placed in a liposomal format that results in 10x faster absorption.

Meditation & CBD – How CBD Can Enhance Your Meditative State

If you’ve made meditation a habit, you probably already know how great it is.

There’s a reason why everyone from the Dalai Lama to Arnold Schwarzenegger testifies to meditation and its profoundly life-changing effects. [1]

But meditation can get even better. How? By combining it with CBD. Keep reading for a refresher course on why mindful meditation matters so much — and a new course on how CBD could enhance it further.

  • Why mindfulness matters
  • Meditation 101
  • The benefits of meditation
  • The story of anandamide
  • Why CBD + meditation = bliss
  • How to combine CBD and meditation the right way

“Give me six hours to cut down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abe Lincoln

What is mindfulness?

To put things super simply, mindfulness is a mental state where one focuses on their awareness of the present moment. Not the past, not the future — just now. Mindfulness involves accepting your feelings, thoughts, and perceptions.

For something that sounds so simple, however, mindfulness can take a lot of practice. It also takes time to get into. Once in a mindful state, though, everything shifts: you become more productive and less anxious. You find yourself in a state where your thoughts and actions seem to just flow smoothly from one phase to the next.

As the above quote by Abraham Lincoln alludes to, it can take time for one to sharpen their mind. Once sharpened, however, you’ll be radically better prepared for the rest of the day. You’ll also be radically more efficient. Even if productivity is your sole goal, taking time to become more mindful is worth it.

The best way to reach this sought-after state of mind is meditation. Meditation allows you to process and break past all the anxieties and insecurities that normally hold you back. It also allows you to unweight yourself from that never-ending to-do list your mind normally defaults to.

Meditation involves mentally training you to live in the moment — in other words, to live mindfully.

But meditation can be tough. Most of our brains are used to multitasking at a million miles an hour. How can we truly be still and embrace ourselves when thoughts of work and bills and our kids’ school events are all vying for our attention?

If you’re anything like we are, making the leap towards meditation might just require all the help you can get! (And by help, we mean CBD…but more on that later.)

For now let’s take a quick look at meditation’s biggest benefits.

Meditation tends to make you realize things. For one, you may start to notice that your mind and body are connected: where the mind goes, the body follows. According to ayurvedic beliefs meditation activates one’s inner consciousness; this deeper level of consciousness, in turn, activates one’s physical body. [2]

Meditation has other benefits, too. Maybe you’ll think of new solutions to otherwise unsolvable problems. Maybe you’ll suddenly be able to accept the way a relationship ended or the unexpected way life has gone. Maybe you’ll begin to sleep better. Who knows!

Interestingly enough, studies show that meditations benefits can persist long after the meditation session is done. [3]

The ayurvedic beliefs mentioned above also make another fascinating connection. The first Vedic texts to mention meditation also mention hemp — the plant that makes CBD!

Could there be a reason for this uncanny overlap? Maybe.

Both mediation and CBD work in similar ways to provide blissful aftereffects. CBD directly boosts your body’s level of an endocannabinoid called anandamide, so named after the Sanskrit word for “ bliss.” [4] Meditation and yoga have been shown to boost anandamide levels, too! [5] Put two and two together and it quickly becomes clear that CBD and meditation are a match made in biochemical heaven.

It’s true: CBD and meditation help each other work even better since they operate through shared pathways. In fact, CBD may make it easier to get into meditation. (Don’t forget that so many CBD users say it helps them eliminate distractions.)

Meditation, in turn, can help you make the very life changes that CBD has made you healthy enough to accomplish. CBD provides the body boost…meditations provides the brain boost…together, CBD + meditation might just strengthen your mind-body connection. [6] No wonder so many people who try this combo report feeling happier and more whole than ever before.

Some CBD products are more geared towards meditation than others. Larger doses of CBD tend to be calmer than smaller ones, so products that make high dose-CBD practical are usually the way to go. Our favorite meditation-friendly stuff includes:

  • CBD Tincture
  • CBD Wellness Gummies

CBD Tincture

Our CBD Tincture is our very most popular product. With only two premium ingredients — 99%+ CBD and organic MCT Oil — it’s also one of our simplest.

This product is available in 3 different strengths: 500mg, 1000mg and 3000mg. For maximum calming effects opt for a higher-strength version.

Our CBD Wellness Gummies beat stress while providing powerful immune support.

Lavender and manuka honey keep you calm, while elderberry, zinc, and vitamin C keep you strong. And then there’s the CBD: our Wellness Gummies feature a truly broad spectrum hemp extract that contains CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDa, CBDv,  and natural terpenes

Last but not least, these meditation-friendly gummies contain a special calming amino acid called L-theanine. Users say L-theanine’s effects pair perfectly with coffee or tea.

Yoga & CBD – Focus, Living In The Moment & Recovery

If you think about it, most people don’t take CBD just to take CBD.

They take CBD to feel a certain way — and hopefully live a certain way, too.

We can’t speak for everybody, but most people take CBD in hopes of growing as people and becoming the best version of themselves.

And guess what? This approach seems to be working.

But it gets even better when you combine CBD with yoga. Both CBD and yoga are mental+physical catalysts that can help you truly thrive. Here’s how to experience this combo for yourself.

  • Yoga and CBD: shared history?
  • Yoga for the endocannabinoid system
  • CBD + yoga = amazing
    • CBD + yoga for focus
    • CBD + yoga for calmness
  • How to live in the moment
  • The best CBD products for your yoga routine

Yoga And CBD: Shared History?

The practice of yoga goes way back. It emerged alongside Hindu spiritualism thousands of years ago — it’s nearly as old as history itself!

Here’s the interesting thing: the same Vedas, or holy books, that mention yoga also mention hemp. (Hemp, of course, is the super-cool plant that provides us with CBD.)

“[Hemp] is one of the five essential plants mentioned in the Vedas, along with soma and barley,” testifies Dr. Uma Dhanabalan. “It is part of our medicinal and spiritual culture. In Ayurveda, it was used to improve memory, against leprosy, and many other things. […] This is a medicine, and it has to be treated as such.” [1]

Hemp and yoga have a shared history. Could there be a good reason why the Vedas mention them both?

Modern science hints that there is. Let’s unravel this reason by zooming out a little bit and looking at the human endocannabinoid system.

One of the endocannabinoid system’s (ECS’s) most important facets is an endocannabinoid called anandamide. This molecule gets its name from ananda, the Sanskrit word for bliss. High anandamide levels make a person feel naturally blissful! [2

The term yoga originates from Sanskrit, too. It’s the Sanskrit word for union — the union that comes with really knowing yourself. All of yoga’s major terms and principles, in fact, come from this ancient language. [3

Maybe it’s only fitting that the endocannabinoid system and yoga overlap in their etymologies.

Why? Because the ECS is what makes yoga’s benefits possible in the first place.

Yoga For The Endocannabinoid System

And this relationship goes both ways. In other words, the endocannabinoid system facilitates yoga’s best benefits…and yoga makes the endocannabinoid system work even better.

A study appropriately titled Care and Feeding of the Endocannabinoid System describes this relationship. According to the study, activities like massage therapy, yoga, acupuncture, and healthful eating may all strengthen the ECS: [4]

“Stress management may reverse the effects of chronic stress on eCB signaling. . . .  Clinical anecdotes suggest that [techniques like] meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises impart mild cannabimimetic effects.”

Even stretching can trigger anandamide production in the muscles being stretched! All in all, the endocannabinoid system is highly adaptable.

It seems to respond to yoga perfectly — triggering a whole host of mental and physical benefits. If yoga gives you clarity, calmness, peace, or bliss…you probably have your endocannabinoid system to thank. Maybe it’s not so surprising that the Vedas mentioned both yoga and hemp after all.

CBD + Yoga = Amazing

The Vedas make it pretty clear that hemp was given to humankind to increase our joy and personal freedom and help us overcome the inevitable stresses of life. [5]

So, what really happens when you combine CBD and yoga? All sorts of potentially-great stuff:

  • Released emotions [6
  • Improved antioxidant status [7
  • Reduced addictive tendencies [8

Let’s dive a little deeper into some of CBD + yoga’s best benefits.

CBD + Yoga for focus

It’s hard to stay focused on your purpose in today’s world. Physical and digital distractions of all sorts bombard our minds and fight for our attention.

Thankfully, a good CBD + yoga routine could help. One 2018 study showed that CBD may reduce addictive tendencies (think checking your phone every 5 minutes) and assist your brain in forming new, healthier habits. [9] “CBD may be highly effective” as an anti-addiction “therapeutic,” the study’s authors stated.

CBD + yoga for calmness

The CBD + yoga combo is also highly calming.

Interestingly enough, this particular effect seems to work via the gut. What’s the connection, you may ask? A healthy gut produces less serotonin and more dopamine, resulting in a calmer, stabler, more empowered mental framework. [10] This is exactly the sort of state that CBD and other cannabinoids (especially CBG) seem to promote.

Yoga may foster gut-health-mediated calmness, too. Studies show that it increases blood flow to the digestive tract. [11] Poses like the seated twist may be especially effective for this. Of course, yoga’s meditative aspects are also great for quieting the mind and fostering feelings of peace and calm.

How To Live In The Moment

If yoga had a single ultimate goal, it might just be to live in the moment.

This is harder than it might sound. Staying mindful enough to be fully present in the now takes a lot of practice. Once you reach this mindful state, though, everything shifts. You get more focused and less anxious. You find yourself in a state where things just seem to flow.

So, how can you learn to live in the moment? Practicing yoga, taking CBD, and meditating is probably your best bet. Doing all these things on the regular will help you live in the moment and break free from the anxieties of the future and the regrets of the past!

The Best CBD Products For Your Yoga Routine

Some CBD products complement yoga better than others. Dosage also matters — since CBD gets more relaxing the more you take, large doses of CBD might be best for your yoga practice.

Here are three of our favorite yoga-friendly CBD products:

  • CBD Tincture
  • CBD Wellness Gummies
  • Relief and Recovery Roll-On

CBD Tincture

Our CBD Tincture is our most popular product for a reason. It’s simple — with just two ingredients — and ultra effective. To get the most out of your yoga routine you may want to opt for the high-strength 3,000-milligram version.

CBD Wellness Gummies

Our CBD Wellness Gummies use broad spectrum CBD and a host of botanicals to directly counter stress. We think you’ll find their lavender especially relaxing! If you’re having trouble really getting into your yoga flow, taking a few gummies before your next session could help.

Relief and Recovery Roll On

As relaxing as it is, yoga can involve a little bit of physical discomfort. Taking your body out of its literal comfort zone through challenging stretches is a part of what makes yoga so effective.

IF you’d like a little help with this growth process, however, then CBD might be just the thing. Applying our Relief and Recovery Roll-On to stubborn muscles or joints before your next session can help your stretches. It features a delightfully soothing blend of CBD, arnica, and menthol. When in doubt you can always just bring this product to the yoga studio — its roll-on format makes it super simple to apply.

Summing Things Up

All in all, yoga and CBD have a whole lot in common. They share their history, have many of the same effects on mental and physical health, and even both work via the endocannabinoid system! Why not combine them? If you’re anything like us, we think you’ll like the combo.

Morning Routines & CBD – Integrating CBD Into Your Morning Ritual

If getting up and going in the morning is more of an internal battle than a joyful experience, it might be time for a change.

In truth, the way you get up and start your day says a lot about your health. It also says a lot about how the rest of your day is likely to go. Keep reading to learn about a CBD-infused morning routine that addresses both sides of this equation.

Why Starting Your Day Strong Is So Important

“Well begun is half done.” – Mary Poppins

It’s telling that many of history’s most successful women and men were devoted to their morning routines. Many of these routines were eclectic — Nichola Tesla liked marathon walking sessions, while Maya Angelou locked herself into a tiny hotel room to write — yet that’s not really the point. [1]

What is the point, then? Finding a morning routine that works for you is the best way to ensure you have a productive, fulfilling day. Optimizing your morning ritual is important…so don’t neglect it.

Contrary to what you might be thinking, this article won’t be all about CBD. While we’re big fans of the compound, CBD isn’t the end-all-be-all. It’s actually just one part of the puzzle that is morning routine success.

  • Get out in the sun!
  • Do some journaling
  • Try CBD Energy Capsules
  • Try long-lasting CBD Caps
  • Have some CBD-infused coffee

Get Out In The Sun!

Morning is when your day’s circadian rhythm is cemented in place. Therefore, what you do in the morning can set you up for either biochemical failure or success. [2]

It’s true. Morning sun is unique in that it contains less UV light and more red light than what you’d get later in the day. It’s less likely to burn you and more likely to restructure your skin’s collagen networks so you don’t get burned. [3]

And when this unique blend of wavelengths hits your eyes, all sorts of good stuff happens. Chemical reactions begin firing off: dopamine goes up, cortisol goes down, and your brain’s time-keeping center (the suprachiasmatic nucleus) holds steady. [4]

Do Some Journaling

Get some sun? Great.

The next vital part of a good morning routine is introspection.  You can meditate, pray, do yoga, or partake in anything else that helps you get centered for the day. We’re big fans of journaling.

Studies show that regular journaling can lead to both mental and physical changes. Journaling enthusiast Michael Grothaus has noted that those who journal have a healthier immune system, lower blood pressure, better sleep, and better overall health than those who do not. [5

Other science-backed benefits of journaling include:

  • Reduced depression symptoms comparable to those of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) [6][7][8]
  • Improved and more resilient mood (from just three days of journaling) [9]

In essence, journaling allows you to perceive your own thoughts more effectively and objectively, allowing you to become your own therapist and reframe unhealthy thought patterns. It really is a great way to become centered as you start your day!

Try CBD Energy Capsules

Even with the help of some morning sun and journal seshes, though, facing a new day can still feel daunting.

That’s where CBD comes in. CBD addresses many of the biological limitations that all too often get in the way of your morning mood and energy levels. It can set the stage for a truly great morning — on the cellular level.

If we had to choose a single CBD product to make your morning better, we’d probably choose Medterra’s Wellness Energy Capsule

These capsules incorporate three powerful adaptogens that really level up your game. The rare cordyceps mushroom, once upon a time only available to Chinese emperors, supports overall physical and mental energy as well as immune health. Rhodiola has a long history of use in parts of Europe for maintaining physical endurance and mental clarity — and countering the effects of stress.

Finally, Schisandra has been shown to optimize metabolism and enhance overall physical performance. [10] This trifecta of awesomeness might mean an awesome morning for you.

Try Long-Lasting CBD Caps

Thankfully your morning routine isn’t limited to a single CBD product, though, despite the hypothetical situation we mentioned above.

Another one of our favorite morning-specific CBD products is Medterra’s Good Morning Liposomal Hemp Capsules

They provide a balanced and sustained energy boost to support you through the morning hours. Medterra’s proprietary liposomal technology results in up to ten times faster absorption than traditional oral capsules, allowing the curated blend of hemp and additional supplements to get to work quickly. [11]

With hundreds of five-star reviews, it appears that this product really is helping customers have good (or great!) mornings.

Have Some CBD-Infused Coffee

If you thought regular coffee was good, just wait till you try CBD-infused coffee. The caffeine and CBD synergize while balancing out side effects — it’s a total game-changer.

Making CBD-infused coffee is easy. Just place a few drops of our Hemp Oil Tincture into your next cup of joe!

Made with our American grown hemp extract and MCT oil, this premium tincture is available in strengths of 500mg, 1000mg, and 3000mg (opt for the 3000 if you really need a morning kick).

You might consider adding other healthy fats, like a little bit of grass-fed butter or ghee, to your coffee as well. Research hints that dietary fats may boost CBD’s bioavailability — which makes sense considering CBD is fat-soluble. Besides, this combo is delicious. [12]

Finally, feel free to sprinkle a little bit of cocoa powder or Ceylon cinnamon into your coffee. These healthy additions contain special cannabimimetic (cannabis-like) compounds that may boost your endocannabinoid system by helping it produce more anandamide. [13] In other words, expect some plant-to-plant synergy to take place if you throw these ingredients into the mix.

Summing Things Up

Those early mornings aren’t something you have to dread forever. Enjoying the morning hours is actually a natural, healthy part of the human condition. If you’re not “there” yet, healthy practices and CBD could help get you there.

Trust us…once you dial in your morning routine, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish during the day.

Living Healthy with Alana Blanchard

We caught up with pro-surfer, soon to be mother of two, and a Medterra family member, Alana Blanchard, to hear her thoughts on healthy living, motherhood, and CBD.

Baby #2 coming soon!

This has been a pretty hectic year for me and my family. With quarantine and a new baby on the way, we’ve just been doing everything we can to spend as much quality time together as possible. Usually, I’d be surfing to stay active, but I stopped at 20 weeks so I could spend some more time with Banks.

Lately, I’ve really been enjoying starting my days off with a walk, because moving always starts my day out right. Living that active and healthy lifestyle has always been extremely important for me, and while I’m not taking CBD right now, it’s played a big role in keeping me feeling my best over the past few years.

My CBD journey

I started hearing about CBD probably 4-5 years ago. I was always interested in it as a natural way to counteract stress and discomfort. I was definitely skeptical at first, but as I did more research to learn the difference between CBD from hemp and marijuana, I got more curious about its health properties.

Then one day after a surf competition, I was going up to get my award and saw the Medterra booth. I was a year postpartum with Banks, so I decided to give it a try and was just amazed by how much it helped with my recovery.

Because my lifestyle is so active and demanding, I love anything that will help me feel my best and recover better. I like using CBD as part of my wellness routine, and for helping me manage stress.

We’re plant-based in our house, so I’m always making smoothie bowls with lots of greens and CBD oil. I also like putting it into turmeric lattes and salad bowls with potatoes, hummus, and quinoa. It’s a really big part of my me-time, so I’m excited to be able to get that back into my routine.

Our family is always chasing waves and tournaments around, so we’re used to dealing with travel stress. When we’re on the move, I always have my Medterra with me. I love the gummies, they’re so easy and good that they just feel like a little treat that I can keep in my travel bag.

I also like to keep a couple of tinctures in my toiletries, they’re great for finding just the right amount of CBD, and I can add them easily into my smoothies and acai bowls. And then of course, I keep a roll-on pain cream with me. It’s amazing for massages and dealing with those airplane aches and pains.

Prepping to be a mom… again

I can’t take CBD right now, so I’ve been turning to some other all-natural remedies to help me destress and get some sleep. A good bath with soothing epsom salts, a glass of tea before bed, getting out into nature, and staying active have helped keep me happy and healthy. I’m a big believer in looking into all aspects of your life when it comes to your health. Living naturally, eating fruits and veggies, and avoiding processed foods has helped me so much.

With baby #2 on the way, I’m trying to focus on relaxing and spending time with Banks and Jack. With Banks I was more stressed – he was my first and it was all new, but this time around I’m finding it much easier to relax. Being able to have that time with both of them has just been amazing for my overall wellbeing.

I’m excited to be able to work out again, but I’m prepared to take it slow. Resting is so important for new moms. You’re up a lot, your body is adjusting and readjusting, and what you really need is time to heal. There’s such a strong stigma pressuring new moms to rush back into our lives, but it’s so important to take your time and do what’s best for you. My advice would be to just love your body. Listen to it, tune into it, ignore that pressure, and let yourself just be aware of all the amazing things your body can do.

5 Ways How to Use CBD Creams & Topicals

Have you tried a premium CBD topical yet?

What about a high-strength CBD+ cream?

If not…you might be missing out. CBD topicals and creams are a worthy addition to virtually anyone’s daily wellness routine. Here are 5 ways to use them.

  • Reduce discomfort
  • Before sleep
  • Randomly — as needed
  • After workouts
  • For massage therapy

What are CBD creams and topicals?

First things first, though: let’s review the basics. What are CBD creams and topicals?

Despite their names, both products are designed to be used topically. And they both feature CBD infused into a carrier to make application easy.

The only major difference between a cream and a topical is that a cream has a water base, while a topical usually has an oil base.

Since CBD is fat-soluble, CBD creams must be emulsified for their CBD component to stay effective.

Applying CBD Cream on Shoulder

Way #1: Who Doesn’t Want Less Discomfort?

CBD topicals and creams provide a natural way to relieve discomfort.

Unlike other CBD products, topicals and creams can be used to target problematic areas directly.

CBD topicals work by targeting two major receptor systems within your body. The first system to be activated is the endocannabinoid system; CBD can bind to CB2 receptors located throughout your skin. [1]

What’s less well-known is that CBD also acts on a completely different type of receptor: the TRPV receptor. [2] By acting on TRPV1, CBD may temporarily block the painful effects of chronic inflammation.

Way #2: Before sleep

CBD topicals and creams can also be used prior to sleep. One recent study found that CBD could calm the mind enough to promote more relaxing sleep sessions. [3

If you’re trying to relax and find that night time discomfort is holding you back, don’t worry. Just apply a little bit of your favorite CBD cream/topical!

Way #3: Randomly — as needed

One of the best things about CBD topicals is that application is easy. It’s not all that hard to just find your relief by feel

Think of CBD oils and tinctures as your daily baseline — and CBD topicals as the proverbial icing on the cake. If your daily serving of CBD oil isn’t quite cutting it, just add a little bit of topical CBD into the mix…wherever, and whenever it’s needed!

Way #4: After workouts

Is there anything better than a good workout? We think so: feeling good after a good workout.

But if it’s been an hour since your last running session and your legs are still hurting, something might be missing. You may have subjected your body to more inflammation/oxidation/lactic acid than it can handle. [4

Thankfully, escaping this type of post-workout discomfort is doable. Just use some topical CBD! CBD may quench the discomfort caused by intense workouts. [5] While more research is still needed in this area, pro cyclists, golfers, MMA fighters, and strongmen are already praising CBD’s recovery-boosting properties. [6

Way #5: For massage therapy

We saved the very best way to use CBD creams and topicals for last: during massage therapy.

CBD salves of all sorts can be used in place of regular massage oils without any inconvenience.

If anything, they might amplify the already-awesome effects of massage! Some research has found that both CBD and massage therapy exert their mood-boosting effects through the endocannabinoid system. Why not use them together? [7

Summing things up

Consider using a CBD topical when nothing else will work. It might just give you the direct boost you’re looking for!

And even if you’re already completely happy with your CBD-infused wellness routine, don’t neglect the benefits of CBD topicals and creams.

CBN – Everything You Need to Know About Cannabinol

CBD’s popularity has been booming for over three years now. Amazing how time flies, huh?

Now it seems to be CBN’s turn. CBN, or cannabinol, is another amazing cannabinoid found only in cannabis/hemp…and it has some pretty unique effects. Here’s what you need to know about CBN.

  • What is CBN?
  • How to take CBN
    • CBN oil
    • CBN tinctures
  • CBN effects
    • CBN and sleep
  • Dosing CBN
  • Summing things up

What is CBN?

CBN (cannabinol) is a cannabinoid, which places it into the same family as CBD, CBG, THC, and over a hundred others. [1]

Unlike any of the other big six cannabinoids, however, CBN shows up when hemp is exposed to heat or light. (Only trace amounts of CBN are naturally present in full spectrum hemp oil.) Both CBD and THC can be broken down into CBN under the right conditions. [2]

CBN may not be quite as well known as relatives like CBD or THC, but it was actually the first cannabinoid discovered. This happened back in the 30s, at the lab of a british chemist named Robert S. Cahn. [3]

CBN also has unique effects. Its slightly smaller structure allows it to activate receptors — and confer effects — that other cannabinoids just can’t. [4] More on CBN’s effects later.

How to take CBN

CBN, like virtually any other cannabinoid, can be infused into a wide variety of products. Common ways to take CBN include oils, tinctures, and edibles.

CBN oil

CBN oil is the simplest, most effective way to take CBN. CBN can be infused into a premium carrier oil just like CBD can.

Why the similarity? Both CBN and CBD are fat-soluble, meaning they’re both absorbed best when taken with a little oil/fat. They’re also both broken down in your liver, which means that taking CBN sublingually via oil/tincture is the best way to avoid premature breakdown. [5]

CBN tinctures

CBN tinctures are another popular way to take CBD. Technically, a tincture is a liquid preparation of cannabinoids that uses an alcohol base, though today the terms oil and tincture are often used interchangeably. True CBN tinctures were once rare — but they’re slowly getting more common.

CBN effects

Many CBN users find that CBD is just a little more powerful than CBD. CBN feels relaxing and uplifting…especially if one takes a big dose.

While CBN works well on its own, it becomes even more powerful if taken alongside CBD.

According to one study, “combinations of CBD/CBN induced a longer-lasting reduction of mechanical [pain] sensitization than either compound alone.” [6] Some experts feel that CBN plays a vital role within hemp’s overall entourage effect.

CBN and sleep

Sleep might be the area where CBN truly shines. Studies show that it may regulate the central nervous system enough to instill peace and calmness.

One older study found that CBN may improve sleep just as much as THC. [7] “I think CBN can be effective as a sleep aid,” naturopathic doctor Nadia Musavvir explained to TZR. “It’s one of the more studied effects and supposed to be more effective than CBD for sleep.” [8]

Dosing CBN

Unlike some cannabinoids, CBN seems to be powerful enough to also work at low doses. Consider starting with a low dose and slowly adjusting upwards as needed.

Summing things up

At the end of the day, CBN is well-studied, legal, and safe. We can’t think of many better ways to relax naturally than to try out this unique cannabinoid.
